Effects of Ganoderma lucidum on Mouse Pulmonary Adenoma Induced by Benzo(a)pyrene

Abstract
The water extract of Ganoderma lucidum was studied for its capacity to inhibit benzo(a)pyrene(BP) induced pulmonary adenoma in N : GP(S) mice, comparatively with the water extract of red ginseng and 13-cis-retinoic acid. Newborn mice were given a
single
subcutaneous injection of 0.5 mg of BP within 24 hours after birth, and then 6.25 mg/ml of Ganoderma lucidum extract or 1 mg/ml of red ginseng extract in the drinking water, or 240 mg of 13-cis-retinoic acid in kg of the diet for 6 weeks after
weaning.
All mice were sacrificed at week 9. The water extract of Ganoderma lucidum caused a significant inhibitory effect not only on the frequency of lung adenoma-bearing mice but also on the mean number of lung adenoma(P<0.05), and the water extract of
red
ginseng also showed a significant inhibition in lung adenoma incidence(P>0.05), compared with BP alone group. However, 13-cis-retinoic acid did not show the inhibition in lung adenoma at all. These results suggested that the water extract of
Ganoderma
lucidum has inhibitory potential in the mouse lung adenoma development induced by BP.
